For at least a few houses in every neighborhood, putting up holiday lights is a serious artistic endeavor. This program allows users to create a rough draft, stringing virtual lights on a picture of a home, office, or anything else that needs decoration. The application allows users to experiment with various bulbs and decorations, try out different blink speeds, choose the time of day, or apply effects that make it appear to be foggy or snowing. In our tests, the lighting appeared quite realistic, with a simple interface that allowed strings of lights to be virtually hung with only a few clicks. For users who want to skip the hassle of hanging lights in real life, pictures can be printed or e-mailed. We had a few quibbles with the program’s design, however. The program window can be enlarged only when previewing a result. The application is resource-intensive, and may slow down even powerful systems. The demo version disables many useful features. Nevertheless, we would happily recommend the program to ambitious holiday decorators who want to try out a design before climbing on the ladder.
